Marseille's Mediterranean climate makes it a popular tourist destination all year round. Thanks to its coastal location, the city of Marseille enjoys mild weather during most months of the year, as well as hot, sunny summers and a dry winter climate.

Rainy weather is more likely during the spring and autumn months than at any other time of the year, although these are mostly light showers. Nevertheless, visitors staying in Marseille should be aware that torrential downpours can sometimes occur and should come prepared with wet weather gear.




During the summer months, sea breezes help to moderate the climate and intense summer heat in Marseille, bringing average daytime temperatures down to a more comfortable 25°C / 78°F. A combination of warm water temperatures, sunny weather and a particularly agreeable climate attract visitors to Marseille's beaches and the many small bays and beaches found just a few miles out of the city.

During the spring and autumn, a cold north-easterly wind known as the Mistral can strike, often with very little warning. This hot, dry windy weather can cause temperatures in Marseille to plummet, suddenly turning a pleasant day into a very cold one. The Mistral forms when high-pressure air from central France meets low-pressure air over the Mediterranean. Wind speeds can reach 100 kph / 62 mph, leading to tree damage and particularly rough seas.

Low rainfall during the winter months helps to make the Marseille region one of the driest in the whole of France. January and February tend to be the coldest months, with daytime temperatures averaging at 10°C / 51°F. Although frosty weather can occur, sometimes as late as March and April, these are not frequent and the overall climate remains appealing.
